Onidake Observatory is a celestial observation facility on Fukue Island in Nagasaki's Goto Islands. Positioned on Onidake (315m), the town symbol, it features Kyushu's largest 60cm Newton reflective telescope. The island's unique light-free environment provides starry skies offering celestial experiences impossible on the mainland.
Observation Environment
The Goto Islands, positioned approximately 100km west of Kyushu, are separated from major cities like Nagasaki by ocean. Surrounded entirely by sea, 360-degree human light sources minimal conditions achieve Bortle class 2 darkness. Marine climate means less atmospheric dust—stars show color brilliantly, an island advantage. Winters often bring excellent seeing (atmospheric stability), ideal for planetary surface observation.
Facilities and Visitor Information
The 60cm Newton reflective telescope operates through reservation-based night observation allowing visitors to observe lunar craters, Saturn's rings, nebula faint light, and other details through this impressive telescope.
Onidake's mountainside reveals sea and sky as unified scenery; celestial observation before and after allows sunset and sunrise enjoyment.
Access
About 5 minutes by car from Goto Tsubaki Airport. About 15 minutes by car from Fukue Port. Fukue Island access: Jetfoil from Nagasaki Port about 85 minutes, Ferry about 3.5 hours. Also available: Fukuoka and Nagasaki airports offer flights to Goto Tsubaki Airport.
Observation Tips
Island weather changes rapidly—clouds can suddenly blanket the island. Plan multi-night stays, creating multiple opportunities. Night observation requires complete advance reservation—book during travel planning stages. Strong sea wind demands wind protection.
