Misato Observatory — Enjoy 105cm Telescope and Starry Skies in Wakayama's Mountain Valley in Japan
Overview
Misato Observatory is a public observatory at approximately 430m elevation in Kimino Town, Kawakami District, Wakayama Prefecture. Featuring a 105cm reflective telescope, it promotes itself as a "miraculous starry sky spot where you meet the Milky Way." With excellent accessibility from Osaka (about 90 minutes by car), it's particularly popular with Kansai astronomy enthusiasts. Professional staff provide careful starry sky guidance, making it an excellent beginner's observatory.
Observation Environment
Kimino is located in northern mountainous Wakayama, with Oishiyama's mountain ridges blocking Wakayama and Osaka area light. Around 430m elevation and Bortle class 3 darkness, the Milky Way is visible by naked eye. Particularly southward opens into Kii Mountains' depths with minimal light pollution, ensuring favorable observation conditions.
Facilities and Visitor Information
The 105cm reflective telescope opens to public during night observation sessions. Through this telescope with professional staff explanation, you can observe seasonal planets, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Observation session (star tour) costs ¥1,500 adults, ¥200 students.
The planetarium offers seasonal starry sky explanations; the exhibition room teaches astronomy fundamentals. Cloudy-night planetarium enjoyment is a helpful feature.
Access
About 60 minutes by car from Kaiynan East IC on the Hanwa Expressway via National Route 370. Though mountainous, the road is well-paved. Parking near the observatory is free.
Observation Tips
Night observation session dates and times vary seasonally—confirm via official website beforehand. After night observation, you can enjoy your own binoculars or telescope from surrounding parking areas. Mountain valleys have strong night cooling, requiring cold-weather gear year-round.
