Minami-Aso Luna Observatory — Spend a Starry Night at Aso with an 82cm Telescope and Auberge in Japan
Overview
Minami-Aso Luna Observatory is a private celestial observation facility at approximately 600m elevation in Minami-Aso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Featuring an 82cm reflective telescope as its main instrument, supplemented by a 6-unit solar telescope for daytime use and a 141mm binocular celestial telescope, the facility offers diverse observation equipment.
Adjacent Auberge Mori no Atelier enables the unique experience of combining stargazing with fine dining—a one-of-a-kind offering.
Observation Environment
Minami-Aso Village sits at the southern base of Aso Caldera's outer mountain range, surrounded by Aso's Five Peaks and the outer mountains. Approximately 50km from Kumashiro City and surrounded by natural terrain that blocks urban light, the location achieves Bortle class 2 darkness. Aso's clear air and moderate elevation combine for year-round favorable observation conditions. Summer's Milky Way appears as a magnificent band across Minami-Aso's wide sky.
Facilities and Visitor Information
The 82cm reflective telescope is available to overnight guests through celestial observation programs. Professional staff guidance allows observation of planetary surface detail, individual globular cluster stars, and extragalactic nuclei through this large telescope.
Auberge Mori no Atelier operates a French-based restaurant featuring local ingredients. The common experience of dinner followed directly by celestial observation is popular.
Day visits are possible, but overnight guests receive priority for observation. Advance confirmation is needed.
Access
About 60 minutes from Kumamoto IC on the Kyushu Expressway via National Route 57 (or newer routes). About 40 minutes from Aso Kumamoto Airport.
Observation Tips
Advance accommodation reservation is strongly recommended. Summer vacation and holidays often result in fully booked status. Celestial observation sessions may be cancelled due to weather, though planetarium programs may substitute. Professional staff enhance the experience for all levels.
