Overview
Kuju Highland is an approximately 800m elevation highland spreading across Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, at the southern foothills of the Kuju mountain range. Protected as part of Aso-Kuju National Park, this vast grassland is beloved by astronomy enthusiasts as one of Kyushu's most beautiful starry sky locations.
Observation Environment
Kuju Highland lies in central Kyushu with the Kuju mountain range to its south. Being sufficiently distant from major cities like Oita and Kumamoto, light pollution remains minimal.
The vast approximately 800m elevation grassland has minimal visual obstruction, with a 180-degree or greater panorama opening especially toward the southern sky. Bortle class 2 darkness enables powerful Milky Way visibility. The sight of the Milky Way rising against the Kuju mountain range silhouette is spectacular, earning recognition as a premier Kyushu stargazing location.
Recommended Observation Points
Several display parking areas line Kuju Highland's main road, each offering different directional sky views. Kuju Highland Observatory is particularly open to the south, ideal for summer Milky Way photography.
Staying at Kuju Highland Cottage allows heartfelt stargazing from grounds with minimal artificial light. The luxury experience of watching stars from the open-air bath is unparalleled.
Access
About 50-60 minutes by car from Kuju IC on the Oita Expressway. Access from the Kumamoto direction is also possible via Aso.
Observation Tips
Grasslands experience strong radiative cooling—on clear nights, temperatures drop rapidly. Summer nights can fall below 15°C, making light fleece or wind breaker essential. The grassland is pasture, so avoid fences and private property.
