Chokai Highland (Flower-Stand Pasture Park) — Japan's 2nd Best Stargazing Spot in Akita

Oppdatert: editorial

Overview

Chokai Highland Flower-Stand Pasture Park is a highland resort spread across the base of Chokai Mountain in Yuri-Honjo City, Akita Prefecture. It has achieved nationwide recognition as the 2nd best stargazing location in Japan's continuous star-sky observation survey conducted by the Ministry of the Environment.

Located at an altitude of approximately 500 meters, this open pasture offers unobstructed views where the silhouette of Chokai Mountain combines with a canopy of stars to captivate all who visit.

Observation Environment

Located at the base of Chokai Mountain and influenced by the Sea of Japan climate, the site boasts exceptional transparency on clear nights under high pressure. With no major cities nearby and an open pasture landscape, the location enables observations all the way to the horizon.

From autumn through winter, the Sea of Japan side experiences frequent cloud cover, but summer offers crystal-clear nights when the Milky Way arcs overhead, attracting many astronomy enthusiasts during meteor shower seasons.

Facilities and Information

The park features multiple cottages for overnight stays, allowing you to enjoy the stars at a leisurely pace. BBQ facilities and pasture experiences are available, making it possible to enjoy family activities during the day and star observation at night.

The facility operates from late April through early November, closing during winter. Cottage reservations can be made by phone or website.

Access

About 50 minutes by car from JR Ugo-Honjo Station; about 40 minutes from Honjo IC on the Nippon-Kai Tohoku Expressway. The mountain road requires care when driving at night.

Stargazing Tips

The pasture's open area provides the best sky views. The grassland surface makes it comfortable to lay out a mat and observe while lying back. Highland nights can be cool even in summer, so bring a long-sleeved jacket. By facing away from Chokai Mountain, you'll have the southern sky open before you, perfect for enjoying the brightest part of the summer Milky Way.
