Observation environment

Minami-Aso Village sits at the southern foot of the Aso Caldera's outer rim, surrounded by the Aso Five Peaks and outer mountains that shield city light pollution. About 50km from Kumamoto city center, Bortle Scale Class 2 darkness is ensured.

Aso's clear atmosphere and moderate elevation combine to provide excellent conditions year-round. Summer Milky Way appears as a magnificent band filling the wide Minami-Aso sky.

About 60 minutes from Kumamoto IC on the Kyushu Expressway via Route 57 (or alternate routes). About 40 minutes from Aso Kumamoto Airport.

Stargazing tips

Early accommodation reservation is highly recommended. Summer vacation and holiday periods fill quickly—this is a popular facility. Weather-dependent cancellation occurs, though indoor planetarium alternatives are sometimes offered.
