Its notably dense core — one of the most concentrated of any Messier globular — makes it appear more star-like at low power than sprawling clusters like M22. Ancient red giant stars make up much of its stellar population, with ages estimated at over 10 billion years. In 1860, a nova erupted within M80, briefly making the cluster one of the brightest objects in the summer sky.

Observing Guide

Finding It

M80 sits in Scorpius and transits around 8–10 PM in summer. It falls roughly halfway between Antares and Graffias (Beta Scorpii) — a convenient hop from either of these bright stars. A Finder scope makes confirming the position straightforward before switching to the main eyepiece.

Observing Tips

The contrast between M80's compressed core and its more scattered outer fringe is the visual highlight. Larger apertures progressively resolve individual stars from the halo inward; a 150mm telescope begins to show granularity at the cluster's edge even when the core remains unresolved.

A 60mm telescope or larger shows M80 as a bright, condensed glow. At 100mm and above, some stellar resolution begins at the periphery. Stable atmospheric Seeing is as important as aperture for resolving the outer stars.

Astrophotography Tips

Prime-focus photography attached to the telescope with tracking works well for M80. Choose an exposure that preserves detail in the dense core without burning it out — shorter sub-frames with later stacking gives more control than a single long exposure.
