The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is a large emission nebula in Sagittarius, catalogued as NGC 6523. At magnitude 6 and about 5,200 light-years distant, it sits in one of the richest stretches of the summer Milky Way — large enough and bright enough to see without optical aid from a truly dark site, and spectacular through any telescope.

Finding It

The Lagoon Nebula sits in Sagittarius and transits around 8–10 PM in summer. From the distinctive Sagittarius "Teapot" asterism, look a couple of degrees north of the spout stars. In a dark sky, a faint naked-eye glow marks the region before you even raise binoculars.

Observing Tips

A UHC or OIII filter narrows the bandpass to nebular emission lines and dramatically improves contrast, especially from suburban sites. Without a filter, the central cluster NGC 6530 pops out; the surrounding gas becomes more obvious as your eyes dark-adapt. Low magnification shows the nebula's full angular extent — roughly 1.5 degrees across.
