M78 is a reflection nebula in Orion, catalogued as NGC 2068. At magnitude 8.3 and about 1,600 light-years away, it is the brightest reflection nebula in Messier's catalog — and the brightest of its type in the entire sky. While less dramatic than the nearby Orion Nebula (M42), it offers a distinctly different observing experience on winter nights.

Finding It
M78 sits in Orion, transiting around 8–10 PM in winter. From Alnitak (the easternmost belt star), move about 2.5 degrees to the north-northeast. The two bright stars inside the nebula serve as a useful anchor once the hazy patch comes into view in the Eyepiece.
Observing Tips
A UHC or OIII filter actually dims M78 rather than helping, since this is a reflection nebula rather than an emission nebula — filters designed to isolate emission lines won't improve contrast here. Dark skies and an 80mm or larger aperture are your best tools. The two interior stars and the comet-like shape of the nebula glow are the key visual features.
Recommended Equipment
A telescope with at least 80mm aperture provides enough light grasp to show M78 convincingly. A dark site is critical — this is a target where sky background quality matters more than magnification.
