Finding It
M77 sits in Cetus and transits around 8–10 PM in autumn. Delta Ceti lies very close by — M77 is only about 1 degree southeast of this star, making it one of the easier Messier galaxies to pinpoint with a basic star chart or planetarium app.
Observing Tips
At the Eyepiece, M77's bright, almost star-like core is immediately apparent. The surrounding halo requires dark skies and a larger aperture. Use low magnification first to confirm the galaxy's presence, then increase power to examine the nucleus. Dark-adaptation allows the faint outer disk to appear.
Recommended Equipment
An 80mm telescope shows M77's bright core clearly. A 150mm instrument under dark skies reveals more of the surrounding disk and hints at the slightly elongated structure of the galaxy's inner region.
Astrophotography Tips
