M77 is a spiral galaxy in Cetus, catalogued as NGC 1068. At magnitude 8.9 and roughly 60 million light-years away, it is a prominent autumn galaxy — and one of the most scientifically studied objects in the sky. M77 is the prototype of Seyfert galaxies: spirals with extremely luminous, active nuclei powered by mass accretion onto a supermassive black hole.

Finding It

M77 sits in Cetus and transits around 8–10 PM in autumn. Delta Ceti lies very close by — M77 is only about 1 degree southeast of this star, making it one of the easier Messier galaxies to pinpoint with a basic star chart or planetarium app.

Observing Tips

At the Eyepiece, M77's bright, almost star-like core is immediately apparent. The surrounding halo requires dark skies and a larger aperture. Use low magnification first to confirm the galaxy's presence, then increase power to examine the nucleus. Dark-adaptation allows the faint outer disk to appear.

An 80mm telescope shows M77's bright core clearly. A 150mm instrument under dark skies reveals more of the surrounding disk and hints at the slightly elongated structure of the galaxy's inner region.

Astrophotography Tips

M77 photographs well through a standard telescope and camera on an Equatorial mount. Stacked long exposures reveal the galaxy's full disk extent and, in very deep images, spiral arm structure that visual observers rarely see. The bright nucleus provides a natural reference point for focusing.
