The Little Dumbbell Nebula (M76) is a planetary nebula in Perseus, catalogued as NGC 650/651. At magnitude 10.1 and about 2,500 light-years away, it is often cited as the faintest object in the entire Messier catalog — yet it rewards persistent observers who bring a dark sky, a suitable aperture, and a narrowband filter. Its twin-lobed shape recalls the more famous Dumbbell Nebula (M27) in Vulpecula, hence the popular name.
Planetary nebulae are the ejected outer shells of dying sun-like stars. M76's two bright lobes represent the equatorial ring of expelled material, seen from an angle that makes the double-lobed structure most apparent.

Finding It
M76 sits in Perseus and transits high in the north-south sky around 8–10 PM in autumn. Phi Persei is a useful nearby guide star, about 1 degree to the south-southwest. At low power, M76 looks like a faint, slightly extended star. Confirming the nebula's shape requires medium-to-high magnification.
Observing Tips
A UHC or OIII filter is highly recommended — narrowband filters dramatically improve contrast for faint planetary nebulae and can make the difference between barely detecting M76 and seeing its double-lobed structure clearly. Use medium magnification (100–150x) to bring out the elongated shape. Dark-adaptation and a completely dark site are non-negotiable for this target.
