M67 is an open cluster in Cancer, catalogued as NGC 2682. At magnitude 6.1 and about 2,700 light-years away, it is one of the oldest open clusters known — estimated at roughly 3.2 to 5 billion years old. That extreme age for an open cluster gives M67 a stellar population quite different from the young, blue-star-dominated clusters common elsewhere in the Milky Way.

Open clusters typically disperse within a few hundred million years. M67's survival to multi-billion-year age is attributed partly to its orbit, which keeps it away from the disruptive giant molecular clouds of the galactic plane.

Finding It

M67 sits in Cancer and transits around 8–10 PM in spring. Alpha Cancri (Acubens) is only about 2 degrees to the east — an easy jump in a Finder scope. The cluster shows as a rich, slightly granular glow even in binoculars.

Observing Tips

Open clusters reward low magnification that fits the full spread of stars in a single field. M67 is particularly interesting when you note the range of star colors — the orange and yellow evolved giants stand out against the white and blue-white main sequence stars. This color variation is a direct signature of the cluster's advanced age.

Binoculars or a 60mm telescope show M67 well. A 100mm instrument at low power reveals the full cluster in a rewarding, resolved view. The cluster's relatively small angular size means higher magnification can be used without cropping too aggressively.

A short-focal-length telescope with a tracking mount and stacked exposures captures M67's full membership, including the fainter evolved stars.
