M66 is a spiral galaxy in Leo, catalogued as NGC 3627. At magnitude 8.9 and about 35 million light-years away, it forms the Leo Triplet together with M65 and NGC 3628 — one of the finest galaxy groups in the spring sky. Gravitational interactions within the triplet have distorted M66's spiral structure, giving it an asymmetric appearance compared to its neighbor M65.

Finding It
M66 sits in Leo and transits around 8–10 PM in spring. Both M65 and M66 lie about 3 degrees south-southeast of Theta Leonis (Chort). A low-power Eyepiece can frame both in the same field — an immediately satisfying pair that rewards any spring galaxy session.
Observing Tips
At low magnification, M65 and M66 share a field of view. M66 appears slightly larger and brighter than M65, with a more obvious core. Larger apertures under dark skies begin to reveal the asymmetric shape compared to the more even oval of M65. The third member, NGC 3628, requires a wider field to include in the same view.
Recommended Equipment
An 80mm telescope shows both M65 and M66 as distinct galaxies. At 150mm, the size difference and brightness distribution across M66 become clearer. Genuinely dark skies are required to trace any extent beyond the core.
