Overview
M65 is a spiral galaxy in Leo, catalogued as NGC 3623. At magnitude 9.3 and roughly 35 million light-years away, it forms one third of the Leo Triplet alongside M66 and NGC 3628. Compared to its neighbors, M65 has a regular, undisturbed spiral form — it appears to have escaped the more severe tidal distortions that mark M66 and NGC 3628.
Spiral galaxies like M65 display well-defined arms curving away from a prominent central bulge. M65's relative regularity makes it a textbook intermediate spiral (SAb type).

M65 lies about 35 million light-years from Earth and shines at magnitude 9.3. Its elongated oval shape, due to a moderately inclined viewing angle, makes it visually distinct from the nearly edge-on NGC 3628 and the more disturbed M66. It appears relatively undisturbed despite its proximity to its two companions in the triplet.
Observing Guide
Finding It
M65 sits in Leo, transiting around 8–10 PM in spring. The pair M65/M66 lies about 3 degrees south-southeast of Theta Leonis and fits comfortably in a wide-field Eyepiece together. M65 is the slightly fainter and more elongated of the two, situated immediately west of M66.
Observing Tips
Use low magnification to keep both M65 and M66 in the same field and compare their shapes. M65's elongated oval contrasts with M66's rounder, more asymmetric core. Dark-adaptation and a genuinely dark site improve the view of the outer disk for both galaxies.
Recommended Equipment
A medium telescope with at least 80–100mm aperture shows both members of the pair clearly. At 150mm, the elongated oval of M65 becomes quite distinct and its brightness concentration toward the center is apparent.
Astrophotography Tips
M65 photographs best as part of the Leo Triplet composition. A wide-field frame including M65, M66, and NGC 3628 is a spring astrophotography benchmark. Guided tracking on an Equatorial mount, combined with stacked long exposures, captures all three galaxies and demonstrates the spatial relationship between them.
