Overview
M61 is a barred spiral galaxy in Virgo, catalogued as NGC 4303. At magnitude 9.7 and roughly 60 million light-years away, it is one of the largest galaxies in the Virgo Cluster and a prolific producer of supernovae — six have been recorded there between 1926 and 2020, more than in almost any other Messier galaxy.

Finding It
M61 sits at the southern edge of the Virgo Cluster and transits around 8–10 PM in spring. 16 Virginis is a nearby naked-eye star just over a degree to the north-northwest — a useful anchor in an area lacking obvious bright guide stars. A low-power Eyepiece sweeping from there usually picks up M61 quickly.
Observing Tips
M61 appears as a fairly bright, round glow with a prominent central condensation. Under dark skies with 150mm or more aperture, an elongated inner bar structure becomes discernible at the core. Dark-adaptation is essential, as is low magnification to maintain contrast against the dark sky background.
Recommended Equipment
A medium telescope with 80mm or more aperture detects M61 from a dark site. A 150mm or larger instrument begins to show the bright bar-shaped nucleus that distinguishes this barred spiral from round ellipticals in the same region.
Astrophotography Tips
Guided long exposures on an Equatorial mount, with image stacking, reveal M61's barred spiral structure, inner ring, and outer disk. Deep exposures have captured the faint outer spiral arms extending well beyond the bright core region. The multiple supernova discoveries make archival comparison images interesting to examine.
