Overview
M60 is a giant elliptical galaxy in Virgo, catalogued as NGC 4649. At magnitude 8.8 and roughly 60 million light-years away, it is one of the brightest elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster and one of the most massive galaxies within roughly 100 million light-years of the Milky Way.
M60 has an immediate visual interest beyond its own appearance: the spiral galaxy NGC 4647 appears just north of M60, making a striking interacting-galaxy pair that fits in the same medium-power Eyepiece field.

M60 lies about 60 million light-years away and shines at magnitude 8.8. It is one of the three brightest ellipticals in the Virgo Cluster alongside M87 and M49. Its stellar population is composed almost entirely of old, evolved stars. The galaxy harbors an ultramassive black hole with a mass estimated at over 4 billion solar masses.
Observing Guide
Finding It
M60 sits in Virgo and transits around 8–10 PM in spring. Moving east from M59 along the line of eastern Virgo Cluster galaxies brings M60 into the field. The nearby spiral NGC 4647 sits only about 2.5 arcminutes to the north, making the pair immediately identifiable.
Observing Tips
At low magnification, the round glow of M60 and the fainter oval of NGC 4647 are visible together. Distinguishing the two requires at least 80mm aperture and dark skies. M60's brighter, rounder profile contrasts with the softer, slightly elongated NGC 4647. The contrast between an elliptical and a spiral in the same field makes this a teaching-moment pairing.
Recommended Equipment
A small telescope with 80mm or more aperture shows M60. A 150mm instrument under good conditions brings out both galaxies clearly and starts to show the concentration gradient of M60's core against the outer envelope.
Astrophotography Tips
Tracked long exposures capture the M60/NGC 4647 pairing in a single frame. Deep imaging shows signs of tidal interaction between the two galaxies. Stacked exposures on an Equatorial mount provide the signal-to-noise needed to trace the faint outer halo of M60 and the dim outer disk of NGC 4647.
