Finding It
The Ring Nebula sits in Lyra and transits around 8–10 PM in summer. Lyra's brightest star, Vega (the brightest star in the summer sky), is an unmistakable starting point. From there, drop south to Beta and Gamma Lyrae — M57 sits midway along the line connecting them, making it one of the easiest planetaries to navigate to.
Observing Tips
A UHC or OIII filter improves contrast significantly, particularly from suburban sites where sky glow would otherwise wash out the fainter outer ring regions. Even without a filter, the ring shape is visible through 80mm at medium-to-high magnification. The center of the ring appears darker than the rim — the doughnut shape that defines this object.
