M55 is a globular cluster in Sagittarius, catalogued as NGC 6809. At magnitude 6.3 and about 18,000 light-years away, it is one of the largest and brightest globular clusters in Messier's catalog — but its very low concentration makes it look surprisingly different from compact globulars like M80 or M75. Spread across a large angular area, it almost resembles a sprawling open cluster when observed with small instruments.

Globular clusters of M55's loose class offer some of the best stellar resolution opportunities for observers with modest apertures, since the stars are not packed into an impenetrable compressed core.

Observing Guide

Finding It

M55 sits deep in the southern part of Sagittarius and transits around 8–10 PM in summer. Its low declination keeps it close to the horizon from northern latitudes, making it a rewarding challenge for observers in mid-northern regions. From the Sagittarius Teapot's spout, drop about 8 degrees south to find M55. Dark skies and a clear southern horizon are essential.

Observing Tips

The loose concentration class means stars resolve easily across the full face of the cluster at moderate aperture. Unlike highly compressed globulars where only outer fringe stars resolve, M55 shows resolved members even toward its center through a 100mm instrument. This makes it visually feel different from summer clusters like M22 or M28 — more granular and open.

Binoculars from a dark southern location show M55 as a large, soft glow. A 100mm telescope resolves the cluster thoroughly, and the large angular size (nearly half a degree) favors low-to-medium magnification over high power.

Astrophotography Tips

M55's large angular size makes wide-field imaging the natural approach. A camera lens or short-focal-length telescope with tracking captures the full cluster and some of the surrounding Sagittarius Milky Way. Moderate exposure lengths prevent over-saturation of the bright core while preserving the extended outer halo.
