M50 is an open cluster in Monoceros, catalogued as NGC 2323. At magnitude 6.3 and about 3,000 light-years away, it is a moderately rich winter cluster sitting between the brilliant winter constellations of Orion and Canis Major. Though often overlooked in favor of its flashier winter neighbors, M50 is a satisfying intermediate target that rewards time at the Eyepiece.

Finding It

M50 sits in Monoceros and transits around 8–10 PM in winter. From Sirius (the brightest star in the sky), move about 8 degrees to the north-northwest. Alternatively, midpoint between Beta Monocerotis and Theta Canis Majoris puts you close. A Finder scope confirms the fuzzy patch before switching to the main Eyepiece.

Observing Tips

Open clusters reward low magnification. At medium power, M50 resolves into a rich spray of stars with the reddish central star providing an obvious focal point. Keep the magnification low enough to hold the full cluster extent in view — too much power crops the outer members and loses the sense of the group as a whole.

Binoculars show M50 as a bright, slightly granular patch. A 60mm or larger telescope at low power resolves the cluster well. A 100mm instrument at 50–75x provides a particularly pleasing view that balances resolution and field size.

Astrophotography Tips

A short-focal-length telescope or telephoto lens with a tracking mount captures M50's full extent with surrounding Monoceros Milky Way for context. Moderate exposures preserve the color contrast between the reddish central star and the blue-white cluster members.
