Overview
The Pleiades (M45) is a spectacular open cluster in Taurus, about 380 light-years away and shining collectively at magnitude 1.6 — the brightest and most famous star cluster in the sky. Visible from virtually every inhabited place on Earth, the Pleiades have been recognized and named by cultures across human history: the Seven Sisters of Greek mythology, the Subaru of Japan, the Matariki of the Maori, and dozens of other names in different traditions.

Physical Characteristics
The Pleiades lie about 380 light-years away and contain at least 1,000 gravitationally associated members within a cluster diameter of roughly 8 light-years. The cluster is young — about 100 million years old — and its dominant stars are hot, blue-white B-type giants. The faint nebulosity visible around the brightest stars (especially Merope) is a reflection nebula — interstellar dust the cluster is currently passing through, unrelated to the cluster's formation.

Finding It
The Pleiades are unmistakable: a tight, bright knot of blue-white stars north of Aldebaran in Taurus, transiting high in the south around 8–10 PM in winter. No star chart is needed — anyone who has ever looked at the winter sky has seen the Pleiades, whether or not they knew the name.
Observing Tips
The naked eye shows six to seven stars depending on sky quality and eyesight. Dark-adapted eyes in genuinely dark skies have counted 14 or more. Binoculars reveal dozens of members and the faint nebulosity around the brightest stars. Paradoxically, a telescope at high power makes the Pleiades worse — the cluster is too large to fit in a narrow field, and the sense of the group is lost. Binoculars at 7x or 10x are the ideal instrument.
Recommended Equipment
The naked eye from any reasonably dark location is sufficient. Binoculars provide the definitive view. Wide-field telescopes at very low power are acceptable, but anything above 25–30x defeats the purpose.
Astrophotography Tips
The Pleiades are a wide-field astrophotography benchmark. A camera lens at 50–100mm on a tracking mount, with stacked exposures of 1–3 minutes, captures the full cluster and the reflection nebulosity around the bright stars in a single iconic composition. The blue color of the stars against the silver-grey nebulosity is one of amateur astrophotography's most recognizable images.
