Kuju Highland, Japan — Kyushu's Premier Star-Gazing Grassland
Overview
Kuju Highland (久住高原) is a broad grassland plateau at about 800 m on the southern flank of the Kuju mountain range, in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture. Part of Aso-Kuju National Park, this sweeping landscape is widely considered the finest place in Kyushu to observe the night sky.
Observing Conditions
Sitting in central Kyushu, well removed from the coastal cities of Oita and Kumamoto, the highland enjoys low Light pollution that nature has essentially protected for free. The vast open grassland leaves no obstructions — from the southern horizon to the zenith and beyond, you have 180 degrees or more of uninterrupted sky. Skies typically measure around Bortle Class 2, with a powerful, structured Milky Way.
Seeing the Milky Way rise vertically above the dark silhouette of the Kuju peaks is one of Kyushu's most photographed night scenes.
Best Spots
Several viewpoint car parks line the main Kuju Highland road, each angled toward a different part of the sky. The main Kuju Highland Viewpoint opens especially wide to the south — the sweet spot for summer Milky Way photography. Guests at Kuju Highland Cottage can observe from the grounds all night, and the outdoor baths offer a surprisingly pleasant way to watch the stars.
Getting There
About 50-60 minutes by car from the Kokonoe IC on the Oita Expressway. From the Kumamoto direction, access is possible via the Aso area.
Observing Tips
Open grassland radiates heat away fast — temperatures on clear nights drop quickly, sometimes to below 15 °C even in summer. Bring a light fleece or windbreaker. The pastoral landscape means there are fences and private land boundaries; stay on public roads and designated parking areas, and respect any land access restrictions.
