Chokai Highland Hanakake Ranch Park, Japan — Second-Best Starry Sky in Japan, According to the Environment Ministry
Overview
Chokai Highland Hanakake Ranch Park (鳥海高原花立牧場公園) spreads across the foot of Mt. Chokai in Yurihonjou City, Akita Prefecture, at around 500 m elevation. The park reached second place nationwide in the Ministry of the Environment's national continuous star observation survey — making it one of the most officially recognised dark-sky destinations in the Tohoku region.
Wide open pastureland, Mt. Chokai rising in the background, and the Milky Way overhead: this view has drawn stargazers and photographers to Akita for years.
Observing Conditions
Set on Mt. Chokai's flank, the area is subject to the Japan Sea coast's tendency toward overcast winters, but when high-pressure clears the sky the transparency is outstanding. No significant city sits nearby, and the ranch's open terrain means the horizon is clear in all directions.
Autumn and winter cloud cover from the Japan Sea side increases, but summer clear nights deliver a Milky Way directly overhead. Meteor shower peaks draw large gatherings here.
Facilities
The park has multiple cottages for overnight stays — ideal for an evening of observation followed by sleep, then early-morning twilight sessions. BBQ facilities and farm experience activities make this a full-day family destination, with the serious stargazing as the evening centrepiece. The park operates from late April through early November; it closes for winter.
Cottage reservations are available by phone or website.
Getting There
About 50 minutes by car from JR Ugo-Honjo Station; about 40 minutes from the Honjo IC on the Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway. The mountain road to the park requires care at night.
Observing Tips
The ranch clearing offers close to a full 360-degree horizon — you can point your telescope in any direction without obstruction. The grass surface is forgiving for lying flat on a groundsheet for naked-eye observing. Even summer nights cool down on the highland, so bring a long-sleeved outer layer. Positioning yourself with the Mt. Chokai massif at your back opens up the southern sky — where the densest core of the summer Milky Way concentrates.
