Biei Hills, Japan — A 360-Degree Starry Panorama Across Hokkaido's Rolling Fields

تاريخ التحديث:

Overview

Biei (美瑛町) is a farming town in central Hokkaido, south of Asahikawa, famous for its undulating "Patchwork Road" and "Panorama Road" landscapes. Those same sweeping hillsides that attract photographers in daylight become remarkable stargazing terrain after sunset.

Observing Conditions

What the Biei hills offer that most dark-sky sites don't is sheer scale. Buildings and trees are sparse, and the gently rolling terrain stays low enough that the horizon remains clear in nearly every direction — a natural 360-degree sky. Elevation is modest at around 400 m, and Asahikawa's glow is a factor from that direction, but the surrounding agricultural land still keeps Light pollution well below anything urban.

The southern and eastern hillsides in particular tend toward darker conditions, and the Milky Way's faint band is visible to the naked eye. Skies measure roughly Bortle Class 3 — a large step up from any city or suburb.

Best Spots

For stargazing and astrophotography, the southeastern hill zone is the sweet spot. Pulling over on the straight agricultural roads between fields is the typical approach — wide sky in every direction, no overhead obstacles. Summer: green fields and wildflowers against the Milky Way. Winter: snow-covered hills and star-fields. Just don't step into private farmland; stick to roadsides and designated parking.

Access and Practical Info

About 20 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport; from Biei Station on the JR Furano Line, a rental car is the most practical option. Biei town has plenty of pensions and small hotels for multi-night stays.

Observing Tips

Hokkaido's interior climate means cold nights even in summer. From autumn through spring, serious layering is essential. Summer nights bring insects — repellent is necessary. Famous foreground subjects for astrophotography include trees that have become local landmarks (near the former "Patchwork Tree" site, the "Christmas Tree" tree, etc.); always respect private property rules when approaching these.
